Water Works

Do you drink enough water each day? And why is drinking water important?
Drinking plenty of water is an important part of maintaining a healthy weight and a nutritious diet. Water plays an essential role in helping our body in processing the nutrients, maintaining normal circulation and keeping the proper balance of food. The body is about 60% water. We are constantly losing water from our body, mainly through sweat and urine. To prevent dehydration, we need to drink adequate amount of water.
Some facts on drinking water:
·         Adult humans are 60% water, and our blood is 90% water.
·         There is no universally agreed quantity of water that must be consumed daily.
·         Water is essential for kidneys and other bodily functions.
·         When dehydrated, the skin can become more prone to skin disorders and wrinkling.
·         Drinking water instead of soda can help with weight loss.

Benefits of drinking water:
·         It lubricates the joints – Cartilage, found in joints and the disks of the spine, contains around 80% water. Long term dehydration can reduce the joints’ shock-absorbing ability, leading to joint pain. The bones of the vertebrae are supported by discs which has water in their central nucleus. So, lack of water can lead to back pain.
·         It cushions the brain, spinal cord, and other sensitive tissues – Dehydration can affect brain structure and function. Water is helpful in production of hormones and neurotransmitters. Prolonged dehydration can lead to problems with thinking and reasoning. It can result in headaches too. Dehydration can cause the brain to temporarily shrink from fluid loss which causes the brain to pull away from the skull, causing pain in the head.
·         The digestive system depends on it – The bowel needs water to work properly. Dehydration can lead to digestive problems, constipation and acidity. This increases the risk of heart burn and stomach ulcers.
·         It helps maintain blood pressure – A lack of water can cause blood thickening which can increase blood pressure.
·         It prevents kidney damage – The kidneys regulate fluid in the body. Insufficient water can lead to kidney stones and other problems like UTI (urinary tract infection) etc.
·         Boosts your immune system – Water strengthens your immune system in two ways. First, it carries oxygen to your body’s cells, which results in proper functioning of the systems. And secondly, it flushes harmful toxins from the body.
How much water should you drink a day?
Each body has its own requirements depending on several factors like age, gender, activity level and more. On an average it is said to have 8 glasses of water in a day. Body needs more water when you are in hot climate, more physically active, running a fever or having vomiting/diarrhea.
Maybe your new drinking habits will lead to a couple more trips to the bathroom. But you’ll be happier, healthier and more efficient with a properly hydrated brain.
                                              Happy living!
